‘Vighnaharta’ The Guarding Ganesha:
To address the growing rodent problem faced by farmers in a peaceful and organic way, we at My Organic Earth, a young Indian organic food brand, launched an initiative called ‘Vighnaharta’ in February 2026 for our community of over 200 organic farmers in Hadoli village, Latur, Maharashtra. These small-scale idols were crafted using clay, mud, and sawdust, and infused with powerful natural ingredients such as chilli, clove, pepper, neem, citronella, eucalyptus oil, and extracts of onion, garlic, and ginger, along with a proprietary blend of herbs. The idols were hand delivered free of cost to our farming community, offering an eco-friendly, non-toxic solution to repel rodents while staying true to the principles of organic farming.

Background:
Rat poisons (rodenticides) are highly toxic to humans, pets, livestock, and wildlife, posing serious risks in both agricultural and residential environments. Although designed to control rodents that destroy crops and spread disease, these chemicals are rarely target-specific. As a result, they can cause severe illness or death if consumed by non-target species. The use of rodenticides may also reduce local predator populations, potentially leading to larger rodent outbreaks in the future. Handling rat poison, especially during pregnancy, poses risks such as miscarriage or birth defects. Farm animals, including cattle, can also be poisoned if they gain access to bait. Predators and scavengers such as hawks, owls, foxes, and wildcats are frequently affected through secondary poisoning when they consume rodents that have ingested the bait.
Ecological Balance and the Concept of “Original Rat Food”
Our initiative does not aim to harm rodents or cause starvation. Historically, rodents survived within forest ecosystems and are highly adaptable, opportunistic feeders. Their natural diet primarily consists of seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetation, insects, and fungi.
Their specific diet varies by species and habitat but generally includes diverse plant and animal matter found in natural environments. This initiative is a small but meaningful step toward redirecting rodents away from farms and back to their natural habitats, thereby supporting ecological balance while protecting agricultural livelihoods. Vighnaharta represents a science-backed, organic alternative to conventional rodent control methods. It aims to safeguard agricultural productivity while maintaining ecological balance and protecting non-target species. Through this initiative, we seek to contribute to sustainable farming practices, farmer resilience, and long-term environmental health.
